2D Studio Art - Painting and Drawing
My sculptures, paintings, and drawings are an exploration of self. This exploration of self delves into how I am, who I am, and what I am. My work addresses and allows me to dig into my relationship with my body, friends, family, and my means of escape from them. My pieces allow
me to do this through a scavenger hunt and puzzle of objects that replicate memories, feelings, and thoughts I’ve had throughout my life. Through common objects, such as jars, hair, pallets, and twine, and various processes of manipulation (hanging, breaking, bending, and painting) I create pieces that give a sense of whimsy and magic to reflect my preferred forms of escapism. This escapism includes cooking and the many realms of medieval fantasy while still addressing the mental war I’m in with myself and my perception of the interactions and history I have with the people in my life. My pieces tend to teeter on the line of intriguing and disgusting to not only describe how I feel living in my body but also allows the viewer to imagine themselves in a body like mine. Through the hair, jars, cornstarch, spices, and clay thatI use in my work, I am able to let the viewer enter the piece with a sense of familiarity and then allow the form the materials take to create a space of self reflection and mutual understanding. This not only allows the viewer to gain a new perspective, but also allows me to process these feelings and emotions with a final product in mind.
