2D Studio Art - Painting & Drawing
My current body of work examines a correlation between body and domestic space. The inspiration behind this correlation comes from experiences and observations of my family's mental illnesses throughout my childhood. During the recurring mental episodes, we formed habits of confining ourselves to our rooms within our home. We developed a need to keep everything interior. Each room and its inhabitants examined within the pieces I create, are unique to each individual’s mental space. The past year, I have lost the majority of my family members and my childhood home. This experience has caused a shift within my work, where I am now reflecting upon my own interior space, to better understand my own identity and become friends with my mental illness.
The work in my exhibition will include projections that will create a raw and honest confrontation with the viewer. I use my work to examine and document my mental hyper fixations. Because the human mind is an untouchable space, I give it structure by giving the empty space bones or a blueprint of a house. Much like my childhood home. This makes me hyper aware and attached to the raw atmosphere and objects within my space. It is through this space and objects that I am searching for the truth of my Identity. I want truth and honesty. The imagery that I depict are correlations that I am making between the physical and mental body. The imagery is also true to the physicality of the present. Whilst the sound revisits the memories and emotions from my past. When the two merge, we find ourselves caught in an ambiguous in-between space, where I now linger.

My creative process begins with a lot of isolation within my own domestic space. I need time and space to be alone. This allows me to sink within myself with questions and form course sites, to then begin to ponder for answers. Because my work heavily revolves around my physical and psychological space, having time to myself is vital. As I sit, I become in tune with my space and how my body is reacting to it. I begin to become hyper fixated on a sound or object, that I have to examine and dissect for answers. Why is the fan making that noise, or producing that much sweat? (sweat being dust.) I become obsessed with these inanimate objects and have to find some sort of truth about their nature. After I gather documentation of that object, I juxtapose it with a sound that will either complement or contradict it in search of its honesty. The time-based projection allows me to construct an ambiguous and abstract psychological space. The projections also enable an enlargement of the imagery to create a space that will immerse the viewer. I want the viewer to be projected into an unfamiliar space. The imagery of the projection will also be projected over the viewer's body as they interact with this untouchable interior space.

The majority of my inspiration comes from my family, as I have previously stated. I am also very inspired by various forms of domestic spaces, nature, the human psyche and behavior. Because I have a strange and almost toxic relationship with words, I find myself to be influenced by the lyrics of musician NF, and the highly descriptive vocabulary by American short story Author, Edgar Allan Poe. When it comes to 2D work, I am inspired by Jennifer Packer and how she uses the intense and saturated touch of paint to project her subjects into a space. My inspiration comes from allowing myself to sit within a space in the world, and observe and question what is around me. I am searching for truth and honesty on the inside of a decorated world.
