Within my work, I like exploring themes of losing oneself through innocent addictions. By innocent addictions, I mean things like excessive daydreaming, social media, or even love. Things that are necessarily bad, but can cause great addictions. The thought of too much of one thing can be bad is often used when working out the details of my pieces. My pieces will sometimes come across as scary and uncomfortable, but I enjoy this too. Negative emotions are fun to experiment with. Lately, I’ve been going back to public transportation as a means of transporting to another world. Subways, metros, buses, trains are all interesting things to draw, plus most people have easy access to these things. This plays into the notion that all the characters in my pieces are ordinary people. I take time with each background character, and draw them as if they too had a story of their own. The storytelling aspect is a huge part of my work. I would say it may be the most important part, actually. Conveying a story through images alone, and having that story stick with people, even if it’s just an impression of simple emotions, is extremely important to me.
