2D Studio Art: Painting and Drawing
Some may view oil lamps as boring ordinary objects that perform a specific task by operating in a simple way. However, different women in my family have collections of oil lamps that have been passed down from generations and some that they have acquired at antique stores throughout the years. I have always been fascinated by the form of the lamps, and I knew I wanted to capture their forms in my drawings. The shapes are so unique and almost individualized. Although I know the objects are fragile, and would easily shatter if they hit the floor, the designs within them are so abstracted and almost robust. The oil lamps seem to contain a world within them full of dimension, unique shapes, and abstracted forms. As a child, I remember looking at these objects that most people would not find extraordinary, but I wanted to memorize them. I wanted to capture the fleeting moments they held inside. There were so many small, abstracted details within the body of the oil lamps. The glass itself would distort the reflection of the room in which it was held. I was amazed that a piece of glass could capture a moment or a memory.
