2D Studio Art - Painting & Drawing
In what world can an undaunted ram and a frivolous chicken dance in a flourishing field?“In a world whose foundation is a marble slab under an illuminating window sill that looks out onto the real world. The lines of truth and falsehood merge together to show a reality that exists also in the imagination or the other thing. The thing that doesn’t speak, or think, walk, or show itself outward. It exists on the interior and only watches. Only in times most desperate will there be a kick to the gut and the other will hint at existence.
My work in painting and drawing combines to document objects in reference to stories derived from the objects' histories and is linked to relationships, histories and mortality. I am inspired equally by the natural world and how it interacts with the inside of a home– a perfect space where stories can be heard. The work is a manipulation of object and idea as proof of living in fear of the passing. Boxes, closets and small corners, all locations of where the most prized memories can be stored. I work to transform the composition of these hidden gems into something recognizable but hardly so. I like to look at the exchanging and gift giving of heirlooms from one generation to the next and what this tradition says about not the object itself, but the relationships between family or loved ones. I focus on the story attached to the keepsake. The object becomes a signifier for personal stories that the giver wants to be told: a legacy. Within this is a fear of lost memories, lost love, missed chances and the human experience with mortality. I take the keepsakes out of the box, I listen to the stories that make them special and I transform their compositions into landscapes, architectures and spaces that give them a life outside of a dust covered box. The drawings do not only serve as a visual depiction of objects, but as a way to show and tell a story that can be understood for its specific meaning, but also as a story that is personal and faintly memorable to any person viewing the work. Similar to the recollection of a fleeting childhood memory or dream. Relocating and transforming these objects onto paper create a way for me to document and tell stories through a malleable and sensitive medium. The result is a highly fantastical but specific detailing of an all-encompassing participation in the exchange of communication.
