The Divine is a project that explores divinity and what that means to people who are decidedly not divine. The concept of divinity has been making its way into my body of work recently. I grew up in a religious household and still practice in my adult life. This is something that has influenced my work before, but is manifesting itself more directly now. My worldview is directly shaped by my faith, so I make sure to question and explore what exactly it is I believe in and how that will influence how I live.
Expressing the divine is something I have become almost obsessed with. The concept of describing something divine as someone who has an inherently flawed understanding of what that means is something that really influences the recent work that I have been doing. This project started with me considering the care and consideration that went into the building of cathedrals. Sacred geometry was my starting point, but as this project developed I became less concerned with the math behind these spaces and more interested in the feelings that these spaces create.
The work that I have been creating has been drawing symbols from religious institutions, particularly Catholicism. I am interested in the way that the divine is expressed within traditional church art, such as cathedral architecture, traditional clergyman robes, depictions of holy figures, etc. The reactions that we, as mere humans, have when faced with holy figures like the saints or
Jesus Christ himself is something that I find myself wanting to recreate within my own work.
