4D Studio Art
This work is a reflection on who I am as a person as well as how I have developed as an artist over the past 5 years. Before coming to university, I was uncertain about my future and what I genuinely wanted to do in life. I would constantly fluctuate between art and a major that was considered more “practical”, but it was never what I wanted to do. I always knew animation was my passion but was not certain if it was the proper path for me, but the last few years have helped me develop more confidence in my abilities as an artist. Although my university years are coming to an end, I feel that my art journey is still in its beginning stages.
This work, being a brief reflection of myself and inner thoughts on my work, will be a short animation that reflects my process as an artist as well as my personal interests that took my art in this specific direction. The style is an homage of said interests as well as experience in the specific medium. I was influenced by the cartoons and video games that I grew up with as well as some that have aired since my time in university. These mediums have helped me become more confident in my style and the execution of the work. The expectation is that I can use these specific styles to properly convey the message of the work.
The subjects of the work are influenced mostly by my own imagination as a result of an ongoing story of my own creation but are also influenced by the creators of some of my favorite childhood shows and web series. Creators such as Maxwell Atoms and Craig McCracken had a big impact on me as a child and are the reason I initially became interested in animation to begin with. Smaller animators like Liam Vickers and Dillon Gu inspired me to investigate working independently as opposed to working for larger studios.
Overall, this work reflects my ambitions to work in the field of animation and character design. When creating work, I find myself imagining more than working because it allows me to have a clear picture of what I want before I attempt to create it. This does often result in ideas grander than what I can accomplish but I find that a good sign. My process prioritizes ideation, trial, and error . I find that I work best
when I try to create what 's in my mind and realize my limits during the process
. It helps me understand how closely I can get to my original idea without having to pacify it from the very beginning.
