2D Studio Art - Painting & Drawing
The combination of figures, drawings and animations is an exploration in world-building, crafts, mystery and experimenting with the space. Many of the scenes are constructed in separate elements, however the elements are altered and composed in a cohesive way. The resin figures act as maritime travelers. They glide over an imagined sea- scape scattered by sparse islands. The project brings feelings of isolation and introspection. The overlay projection serves to frame the space and push light into transparent spaces and to illuminate resin figures. The audio calls to mind a distant, fictional harbor area, accompanied by reverb guitar ambience.
The process of this involves research in myth, storytelling and the ambiguous narrative of legend: The Leviathan myth, Writings for Herman Melville, The Legend of Zelda. The sculpting is done in polymer clay and then casted in rubber silicone to be replicated in resin. This way works with the idea of worldbuilding, I can populate the ‘world’ with the repetition of the casting process. Cardboard and plaster serves as the brick and mortar for most constructed elements including the boats. The animations are a mash of 3d and 2d and provide the tone and setting for the traveler figures. The ‘Travelers’ that adventure are met with fog-ridden, waters with mysterious eyes that meet with you on the surface of the sea. This space draws from experiences of the supernatural and the act of fantasy and world-making.
