4D Studio Art
My work in this exhibition examines my fear of dark spaces and deep water. The work is composed of three animations in black and white with a limited use of color. The imagery analyzes and confines my fears into an Abyss, a dark space in which they remain.
My creative process starts with making a playlist to determine the tone of my project. Video game soundtracks are what I use most in this step. I like to listen to games like Hades, Undertale, Hollow Knight, and Stardew Valley. Then, I storyboard in my sketchbook. The drawings here are always rough sketches to get the idea I have out quick. After the initial idea, I make the official storyboard digitally which is shortly followed by an animatic to show my storyboard in time. Finally, when I start working on the project I choose a sound to listen to - for this exhibition I listened to sounds of rain and the Hollow Knight soundtrack.
On a basic level animation informs my work by allowing my drawings to move. It is important to me to let the drawings be free. On a personal level the repetitive nature of animation allows me to make sense of my fears. Installation informs my work by giving a space where these animations live and gives the audience a chance to experience my fears on a more intimate level.
